Kimera: Taking the Boy Out of Boys' Love | KYOTO VIDEO
Boys Love's popularity in the States is more recent than you think. For this reason, one company decided to try to turn a boy's love anime straight in order to sell more units. Not helped by the anime itself being kinda terrible on its own.

Ichirō Itano is a a true talent in his field of animation. But his directorial work has always been divisive due to it proclivity towards hardcore violence, even by 80s OVA standards. Today, we look at one of his earlier works done by his own studio and see if there's something there beneath the blood and guts. Otaku no Video & the History of Otaku | KYOTO VIDEO
Переглядів 15 тис.4 місяці тому
For my 6th anniversary, I wanted to take a look back at an anime that's more of a historical document than an actual anime. Through a combination self-effacing humor and true love for the medium, a Gainax co-founder made Otaku no Video as a way to poke fun, but also de-mystify the subculture he was a part of. But how does it fare in today's light where otakudom feels more mainstream than ever? ...

I've gotten the impression that America has a live action bias. I.e. it's not prestigious art if live actors are not used. The irony is that a lot of live action movies these days use digital effects (i.e. animation) excessively, sometimes to the point that it's just actors in front of a blue/green screen. It's almost to the point where actors could be replaced by hyperreal digital likenesses and some likenesses are already being brought back from the dead.
Really brings me back.. *cigarette drag* I haven't read/watched Kimera myself but I actually read Kizuna and it's little shounen prequel back in the day. The shounen was pretty damn cute, the art was especially charming, and then there's some mysterious sequel I had to download off a forum somewhere. I had no idea it was yaoi when I picked it up. I actually really enjoyed it, and made plenty of friends in that space. The scanlations were seriously questionable. Something interesting about the yaoi fandom is that it has the image of being primarily female--- which it is-- but there's a not insignificant number of gay men involved too. On various forums and livejournal groups, I'd say about 40% to 50% were actually gay men. That's from my personal perspective. Not counting the transgender/nonbinary/general queers that dont fit into either category. There was a large crossover with otome and shoujo fandoms as well, so it ended up being a space for people who didn't fit in with the at-the-time extremely macho misogynistic/homophobic/transphobic gamer/anime groups. There's a lot to critique about yaoi and it's fandom and it's portrayal of gays but I think there's an alternate perspective too: the womanly "uke" really connected with people who wanted to pursue a nontraditional form of masculinity or even folks who later transitioned, either as a man or out of it. Most ovas of the era were kind of terrible, personally speaking. I liked FAKE and will champion Legend of the Blue Wolves (aka "Hot Space Cowboys", don't watch that version). Not an anime at the time, but Banana Fish was popular even outside of the yaoi space. But in those days, you'd watch anything with gay if you were desperate enough. Damn, I really went off... on a video about an ova I haven't even seen... Well, thank you for making the video, it made me nostalgic. Even if it wasn't a very good ova it's nice to see it be taken seriously. Happy Pride month, keep up the good work.
It's kind of amazing that the anime fandom was so homophobic and transphobic that it wasn't just mainstream anime intended to be marketed to kids in the US like Sailor Moon that turned men into women like Zoycite, but even 18+ VHS releases for the mature horror and gore crowd and they STILL censored it and turned a he into a she.
There's some serious potential with a story like this to explore the concept of gender identity in general. I'd be very interested in a genuine LGBT+-written anime that pulled it off. Also, glomping made me terrified of ever going to a con for the longest time. I have issues with family hugging me at times, especially if I don't see them initiating the hug. I think my brain would short-circuit if a stranger just glomped me out of nowhere.
Got a mild flashback to "glomping" and the friend who was entirely too fond of doing that back in college...
That stinger clip at the end - another tragic case of Delayed Reaction Syndrome.
So if you want a better version of this, just watch Lifeforce. ... Okay, it's not yaoi but it does have Steve Railsback kiss Patrick Stewart.
This feels like it was inspired by that one scene of "Lifeforce." If you know, you know.
This video just made me want to watch bravern again.
Yaoi fandom was a double edged sword. On one side you had the whiny cishet men and bitchy cishet women thinking yaoi fangirls were the only plague on fandom and if they were kicked out everything would be better (all the het shipping wars, powerleveling fanboys, and Best Girl Wars of the past would like a word with those people). On the other hand, you had yaoi fans who DID play into those awful stereotypes by being defensive, bratty, loud, and calling you a homophobe if you didn't ship THE most popular gay ship no matter how many other gay ships you had. Or even if you WERE gay.
The premise kind of sounds a bit like the movie "Lifeforce" (the alien vampires that drain the life out of people part mostly)
On a personal note, the auto gen subs turn "Yaoi" as "Yahweh", and I think that's incredible.
At least with the original, pursuing a gender non conforming romance is already a good way for people to scream at you that you're ending the world So in that sense it works on a thematic level
I thought this was going to be about a chimera
Ah, the classic "she's a man in Japan" trope
This is one of those VHS I somehow remember seeing but... I have no idea how, unless my parents were just COMPLETELY ignorant to what I was watching
wait wasn't that one already covered by you?
No? Why would you think that?
I watched the anime and knew there was something wrong with it... I had NO idea it was a manga adaptation. Looks like I have some reading to do.
Asa middle aged man who grew up watching anime in the 90's this makes me sad. Modern anime has no more soul like it used to. Anime was different and wildly differed in style. Not so much any more.
Another excellent video! Thanks!
That techno remix at the end of the dub though.

Cam you be born gay or do you have to get sodomized as a child to become gay? And for thar matter is it as simple as sexually dominating a child in order to increase the lbgalsbfitmacigknt cult? Can someone answer that for me?
I was SUPER into this film in the late 2000s/early 2010s because of a guy who was part of my local anime convention circut who did showcases of weirder and more experimental manga and anime. There was one other Tamala thing that came out that's not included here, which was a short film called Wake Up!! Tamala which was focused around an environmentalist message. If it's not something you found any info about it must have REALLY come and gone.

I remembered watching Kimera in middle school with my cousin but didn't make it through cuz the dog death freaked me out. Then I re-watched it in high school since I was reading Kizuna & found out they shared the same author. Yeah, it's pretty boring despite the gore but it sure prepared my 17 y/o self to watching Mezzo Forte!
I like kimera a lot. Is it good? Not really. So much exposition dumping and weird stuff. I talk about it in my worst-rated yaoi panel. The most interesting things are the messages about bodily autonomy, depiction of an intersex character, and really great horror animation.
This has been great. I wasn’t familiar with this or Fake, so thanks for the coverage!

Remember Gundam Wing was a thing with the Yaoi fanbase. I agree Kamira sucks I did watch this anime with friends.
I actually discovered this movie recently, and I really like it. I showed it to a few of my friends too. It has a very simple and straight to the point story, but it is very entertaining. The characters are well flushed out and I love the romance between Koji and Shiori.
I remember watching this movie a few years back. The animation was a bit choppy in the story was quite confusing at times , but overall it was a decent watch. The ending theme song is an absolute banger. The only disregard that I have for this movie is the scenes of nudity and satanic subject matter.
lol I watched this a little while ago! It's not amazing? But it's a ride lol Omg please do the Kizuna OVA
I'm pretty neutral-positive towards Yaoi, as long as the shippers aren't so pushy about it. The crazy ones ruin everything. I admit that I wasn't always so open-minded, and while I'm embarrassed by that fact, I'm glad I've been able to mature and move on. Doesn't hurt that I'm probably not completely hetero myself.

When will we get to see a video about Osamu Tezuka's Animerama trilogy, KB?
There was a missed opportunity to stick a "No climax, no resolution, no meaning" riff in there.
Has Looney Tunes’ last episode been cancelled?
No, he mentioned in his community post that it might be released in late-August.
they said around august for that, last time i checked. probably gonna be a long one as there's a LOT to cover when we're talking post-termite terrace LT stuff.
